The LGBTQ community (also known as the LGBT, LGBT+, LGBTQ+, LGBTQIA, LGBTQIA+, or queer community) comprises LGBTQ individuals united by a common culture and social movements. Before the rise of the acronym, people often simply said, "the gay community" or "the gay and lesbian community" — which left out bisexual people, who make up the majority of the LGBTQIA+.

Individuals who dress in drag may or may not consider themselves to be transgender. Gender identity and sexual orientation are not the same. A transgender person who is attracted to more than one gender will likely identify as bisexual or pansexual.

Lgbtq community

Homophobia The fear and hatred of or discomfort with people who are attracted to members of the same sex. Gender identity is expected to align with the sex assigned at birth and gender expressions and roles fit traditional expectations. Lesbian: Usually, someone who identifies as a woman, whose primary sexual and affectional orientation is toward people of the same gender.

Sexual orientation An inherent or immutable enduring emotional, romantic or sexual attraction to other people. For example, a transgender woman who is attracted exclusively to women would typically describe herself a lesbian; if she were exclusively attracted to men, she would likely describe herself a straight woman. Hetereornormativity also assumes people should and will align with conventional expectations of society for sexual and romantic attraction.
