Can trans people join gay mens chorus

Many choruses include individuals who identify as transgender, cross-gender, or gender nonbinary. The Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus welcomes all voices that are capable of singing in the tenor, baritone, or bass ranges. Helping a historically cisgender LGBTQ chorus to become welcoming for trans singers takes work, patience, and deep listening.

You may believe there’s no need to work on gender inclusion because there aren’t any transgender singers in your chorus, or maybe because you’re not an LGBTQ+ ensemble. But you can’t tell by looking whether someone is transgender, and trans singers do not sing exclusively in LGBTQ+ groups. Non-binary is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity doesn’t sit comfortably with 'man' or 'woman'. We sat down with Jane to learn more about the mixed chorus, and how trans singers can be welcomed and supported in a historically gendered artform.
